Tiny homes appeal to many people…and if you’re a physician who spends the majority of your time at a hospital, a small space might be perfect for you. But how exactly do you make 400 square feet or less work? Here are five features that help make small spaces functional.
1. Put your bed on the ground floor.
Most tiny homes have a loft bed, but it’s smart to have your bed on the main level. You can easily do this by purchasing a comfortable sofa bed.
2. Embrace natural light.
The more natural light, the better. Using windows and mirrors can make your space feel significantly bigger.
3. Get creative with storage.
If you’re planning to live in a tiny home and you already have a lot of furniture and belongings, you’ll have to donate a large majority of your items. However, finding space for your remaining items will still be challenging. Some easy solutions include hanging pots and pans in the kitchen area, and keeping blankets and pillows in an ottoman or storage trunk. If you’re smart with you storage space, you’ll probably find more than you imagined.
4. Make sure everything has several purposes.
In a small home, everything has to be flexible. Your kitchen might double as your office, and your living room might double as your bedroom. Because of this, it’s important to have furniture that can serve several different purposes.
5. Research smaller appliances.
GE and other brands are starting to develop smaller appliances for tiny homes, such as an entire kitchen (sink, range, dishwasher) all built into one set. If you’re moving into a small space, check out these options online!
