Buying a home is a big commitment, especially when you’re moving somewhere new for your residency. However, it’s also an opportunity to explore a new neighborhood and town. How will you know if an area is right or you or if you’ll end up with buyer’s remorse? Ask yourself these five questions when choosing the location of your new home.
1. What do you need to have nearby?
Think about your daily life, and write down the things that are important to you. Make a list of stores, food spots, and amenities you can’t do without. Scope out neighborhoods that can accommodate your needs.
2. Do you want to walk around?
Do you want to have stores or eateries within walking distance? Most people don’t have this luxury, so contemplate how important it is to you before buying a new home.
3. What environment do you want?
You may love to party with friends in a certain neighborhood every weekend, but would you want to buy a home there? Maybe not. Think about if you want a quiet, tranquil environment, or a lively, upbeat environment. Just know that a lively neighborhood will come with a lot of extra noise.
4. Do you want to live near friends?
How is your home situated? If you’re on a cul-de-sac or across the courtyard from another resident, you’ll probably have to chat with them occasionally. Some people love this because they have a built-in network of friends, but some prefer to have peace, quiet, and solitude.
5. Can you see yourself living there?
Visit your potential neighborhood during different hours of the day to get a real sense of the atmosphere, and make sure all the boxes are checked on your must-have list. Go with your gut. If it feels right, it probably is.
