Organizing your space now will help you stay focused and goal-oriented the rest of the year. Here are six easy tips to organize your entire home.
1. Declutter your garage.
It’s likely that your garage is the most cluttered room in your house. To combat this phenomenon, hang a peg board with tool hooks. Using a thick Sharpie, draw an outline around each tool to reserve its location. This way, you’ll know when specific tools are missing.
2. Clear the entrance.
Your home entrance should be a spacious area where you can decompress and breathe easily before a big day or after a long day at work. Unfortunately, we often find ourselves kicking off shoes, throwing a coat on the floor, and tossing mail on a counter right as we step inside. Install a pocketed hanger over the back of the door and use each pocket to hold items you’ll need for school, work, or running errands. Mail, lunch money, receipts, keys, and more can be held here. This is great way to keep important items organized.
3. Make a manual.
You might think a household manual is overkill, but it can be an invaluable resource for your home. Use a three-ring binder and a three-hole punch, and keep essential information stored inside. List your emergency contact information, veterinary information, school rosters, alarm codes, medication doses, and where important items are stored in your house. As you continue to organize your home and discover other important things to include, you can add to the binder.
4. Tidy the toys.
Picking up toys is a huge inconvenience. It’s important to teach kids the value of putting toys away themselves. One method that can shift your playroom atmosphere from messy to exciting is organizing with colorful storage bins. Designate specific colors to hold different types of toys, like musical instruments, cars, games, Legos, or dolls. To make it extra easy, label each bin with a picture of the specific toy that belongs there.
5. Clean out the closet.
Overflowing closets can be stressful and overwhelming. In order to create a peaceful sanctuary in your bedroom, declutter your wardrobe. Clear the floor, make sure you have good lighting, take out all your clothes, and only put back what fits and is in good condition.
6. Use bathroom caddies.
When you’re faced with a small bathroom and multiple family members, there’s not always enough room to store everyone’s favorite shampoo, toothpaste, and skincare products. To make this situation easier, assign a labeled bathroom caddy to everyone in the house. Store the caddies on a shelf or carry them to and from the bathroom. This way, the bathroom will stay clean and organized.
