Once you become a homeowner, your to-list grows exponentially. There’s always something to be repaired or improved. However, certain times of the year are better to tackle particular projects. Below is an easy-to-follow home improvement schedule.
- January: Clean your rugs and carpets.
It might not seem wise to do this when the weather is cold, but flooring gets extremely dirty during the winter. Waiting until the spring to remove dirt and stains can make the grime harder to remove.
- February: Paint a few rooms.
When the weather is chilly and brisk, it’s the perfect time to tackle an indoor project. If you’ve been meaning to paint a room or two, now is the time to do it! If you’re planning on hiring someone to do the job, rest assured that prices will be lower during the winter months.
- March: Clean your gutters.
Clogged gutters can’t direct runoff away from your home’s foundation. All that moisture can cause major problems to your foundation. If you want to be extra careful, plan on cleaning your gutters twice a year.
- April: Refinish your hardwood floors.
If you’re planning on ripping up your carpeting to expose the hardwood flooring underneath, complete this task in April. If you wait until the summer, the finish can cure too quickly, and it may not properly dry.
- May: Purchase a new fridge.
May is a popular time to buy a new refrigerator, since summer is approaching. Older models typically go on sale this month, which can mean great discounts for consumers. If you’re up for the challenge, try to haggle!
- June: Clean your home’s exterior.
Wash your windows and power-wash your siding, but make sure all weatherstripping and caulking is secure before you start the job.
- July: Fertilize your lawn.
Early July is a great time to fertilize because it will give your lawn the vitamins and nutrients it needs to persist through the hot summer months.
- August: Paint your home’s exterior.
The best way to do this is by working your way around the house and painting in the shade. If you have a two-story house, you might want to hire a professional.
- September: Replace your windows.
Caulk sticks better when the temperature is between 40 and 80, so early fall is a great time to replace your windows. You also get the added benefit of having new windows (which are way more effective at keeping heat inside) during the winter.
- October: Buy new appliances.
Expensive appliances (like washing machines and stoves) debut their newest models in October. That usually means big discounts on older models. Some companies even promote and begin their holiday sales early!
- November: Remodel your bathroom.
This is when slow season begins for contractors, so they’re more likely to jump on a small project and complete it fast. If you’re in the market for a large renovation, this is a great way to test out a contractor and see if their work is up to par for something on a larger scale.
- December: Build a deck.
December isn’t very humid, so it’s a great time to build a deck with pressure-treated wood. In addition, you’ll probably score a great deal because the deck building business winds down in the winter.
