5 Great Tips for Arranging Your Furniture

Empty rooms can be intimidating, but they can also be inspiring! While the ideal arrangement of your home will depend on the size and the layout of each room, there are certain guides that can point you in the right direction.

1. Find your focal point.

If there’s a focal point in the room, like a large window or a fireplace, arrange your furniture around it to draw attention there.

2. Clear the clutter.

Make sure the path into each room in your home is clear, and be mindful of how many items you’re placing in a room. Use only what you need for comfort and utility, and donate or throw out items you don’t need. Clutter is never a good look, and it will make your home feel claustrophobic.

3. Avoid walls.

Lining furniture against the walls creates a very dull look. However, we don’t always have enough space to float our furniture in the center of the room. If it makes sense to put a large piece of furniture against the wall, like a couch, float a few smaller pieces around it.

4. Encourage conversation.

Consider seating that allows you to share the room with friends and family members. Position a couch and two accent chairs near a focal point, or arrange two seating areas that face each other. This will create an intimate experience with visitors and guests.

5. Keep it simple.

Think about all the practical things you need in your bedroom, like nightstands and lamps, a dresser to store clothing, and a chair or vanity table. The furniture doesn’t have to match, but soft neutrals are classic, and matching lamps are always a hit. Save bold colors for decorative pillows or throws. Add a rug underneath your bed to encourage warmth and coziness. Overall, keep it simple.
