School is about to begin, there’s a cool undertone in the air, and the sun is setting earlier. Fall will be here before you know it. Is your home and yard ready for the crisp days ahead? Here are eight chores you should accomplish to get your home warm and cozy for fall.
EXTERIOR
1. Fix cracks in the concrete.
If you have any driveway or sidewalk cracks to repair, do so while it’s still warm and sunny outside.
2. Clean the gutters.
This job can be a hassle, but it needs to be done every year. While you’re up on the ladder, inspect your roof for damaged shingles. In addition, check out the chimney for any issues.
3. Clean gardening tools and outdoor furniture.
It’s almost time to put away your outdoor furniture and gardening tools, so make sure you clean them and store them properly.
4. Prepare your garden for spring.
As soon as the soil has cooled down in October, plant bulbs. This way, you’ll have beautiful blossoms next spring.

5. Clean the chimney and the fireplace.
Make sure both are in working order. If needed, have the chimney professionally swept.
6. Warm up your home.
Inspect your windows and doors for cracks, gaps, and any other issues that might let cold air inside. Re-caulk around windows and door casings.
7. Embrace natural light.
When it’s cold and dark outside, natural light is everything. Clean your blinds, especially in rooms that receive a lot of sunlight, and add bright lamps to darker spaces. Energy efficient bulbs are also a smart option.
8. Create a mudroom.
If you don’t have a dedicated mudroom, consider creating one. When there’s snow on the ground, you’ll need a place to store your shoes so you don’t track debris all over the house.
